Future Updates

Question:

Will we ever get a “Road Map” like we did last year?

Joe Neate:

No plans for this. We have moved to monthly updates, and our plan is generally going to be talking about what is coming next in detail (with some teases and glimpses of what is to come beyond that). Sharing a roadmap just puts pressure on the development team, when we have a clear focus to build a sustainable working environment whilst also delivering awesome content every month. To do that, we need flexibility. I really like the new monthly rhythm and it feels like we’re getting into our stride. The next few months have some super exciting content, but I like to have some surprises. That’s if James hasn’t leaked them all 🙂

Question:

This first year (and a half) for the game, you focused the content a lot to the general public of the game. With this, you made the game a lot easier, including reaching to Pirate Legend. Do you have plans to make Pirate Legends something to fear on the seas again, including new content for PL too?

Mike Chapman:

Yes, I mentioned previously in the Tall Tales Q&A that we’re looking to unlock the value from all the mechanics added in the Tall Tales as part of new refreshed Voyages… so, absolutely Pirate Legends will see new Voyages in the future that benefit from this. Perhaps… even a reason to return to the Shores of Gold as one of the first;)

Question:

What happend to random emerging Skeleton Ship encounters?
Are there any plans to reintroduce them to the game and make them and Skeleton Ship battles more rewarding and often?

Joe Neate:

in terms of returning; keep an eye out in the next update. In terms of mixing them up a little; definitely some plans for this soon.

Question:

Will we soon be seeing any new content additions to the Pirate Legend aspect of the game and more Legend exclusive cosmetics? Those of us who are legends have been eager for more things to see, do, and earn that are designed specifically for this most highly engaged part of the player base.

I always think back about the things Mike would say about Pirate Legends content around launch, and get sad that none of it has come into the game yet.

Mike Chapman:

Yes, some of the work we want to do relates to voyages, some is new systems work. We have some exciting plans here but too early to share more.

But what I will say is that we absolutely want to enrich the game for Pirate Legends. While we’ve spent the time up till know deliberately expanding the game for all players, we do want to provide new progression options for our Pirate Legends.

Question:

Will there be new shanties soon? I’ve been enjoying the ones we have right now soooo much and would really love to see some more!

Mike Chapman:

Agreed. There will be more shanties in the future, including a new one relatively soon that ties into a track we released very recently as it will have some emotional importance to the next set of Tall Tales.

Question:

Will you introduce more divers wildlife species on island, in the seas or in the sky?

Ryan Stevenson:

We have nothing on the road map right now for new island animals but if we were to add them we would absolutely make them meaningful for the player to interact with, I always love adding life to the world and the fun adventures you can have with them.

Question:

Will the Creator crew include all types of creators? (YouTubers, cosplayers, propmakers, artists, social media fan pages, musicians etc) or will it focus on streamers?

Joe Neate:

We absolutely intend for the creator crew to support all types of content creators, but at its initial launch it’s focused on video. We have some work to do to enable support for creators of other types which we will be working on as soon we launch. Totally understand the question here, we love all of the creativity amongst our community and want to support it all.

Question:

Have you ever thought about adding a moving Island to the Sea of Thieves, something like a big Whale or giant Turtle, that roams the Shroud and sporadically visits one of the three main Seas (The Wilds, Ancient Isles and Shores of Plenty) for a short while before disappearing into the depths again?

Mike Chapman:

Yes, we did! Early in the prototype we had reefs that were submerged under the water that players needed to avoid. When we moved to Unreal, the fidelity of the water made it hard to see under choppy water, hence the move for more Sea Rocks. We did discuss making the reefs more animal based – rocky shell but a soft underbelly 😉 They would have moved around and posed a moving collision threat to the ship.

Ultimately, it might have been a step too far and I think the balance of sea rocks plus the potential for fog is a nice amount of threat at sea.

Question:

Think all us Pirate legends would like to know, Whens that Banjo content in the Pirate legend awesome area gonna be implemted into the Sea of thieves?

Ryan Stevenson:

If you were to look at some of the screenshots from GameCom you might get a glimpse of a certain musical item…we appeared to have had a leaky ship that week 😀

Author’s note – this musical item is the Banjo! Read more about the Banjo leak here

Question:

Could setting bounties on other players work?

Mike Chapman:

We have some exciting thoughts here. In fact, there are small clues in the build right now and more coming soon. Hopefully, you’ll look back in the future and see the foreshadowing!

Question:

With all of the ideas you that you’ve thought of and are planning to implement at some point, do you think you’ll get to a point soon where you need to have a brainstorm with the team and think of whole new content? or do you have your minds full with ideas for a while?

Mike Chapman:

I think we’ve had so many ideas over the years and grand plans for where this game could go. Also, it’s a pirate fantasy world and there are so many features and stories that could feel so unique in Sea of Thieves. I can’t see us ever running out, seriously 😀

Question:

Are there any plans to do events that change their outcome based on player actions all over the world?

Like: Stop the dark ritual by bringing back dark relics. Players deliver enough: ritual stopped, if not: ritual goes on and something happens.

Mike Chapman:

Yes, we’ve talked about so many ideas like this. I love this approach.

In fact, players help with the Dark Relics has already set in motion a course of events you’ll see start to pay off in October and November.

Question:

Any plans for new weapons being added in the future?

Mike Chapman:

Yes!

Question:

If Ship Naming/Ownership does happen, have you considered using the commendation system as a reward and unlock system for more prestigious names you can select from?

Mike Chapman:

Yes!

Question:

Will we get a festival of the damned 2 this year?

Mike Chapman:

Maybe even better! We loved the lantern mechanic and would love to do more! #newandinterestingways

Question:

Will we ever be able to name our ships with a visible placard?

Mike Chapman:

Yes!

Question:

Forts use to be a real hotspot for PVP, I feel like that’s died down a lot since most people don’t need Gold Hoarder, Order of Souls, or Merchant rep as much as they use to. Could you add a barrel to the forts which included several trophy fish for those working on hunters call?

Mike Chapman:

Yes, definitely will be refreshing Forts again!

Question:

Will the Lantern from TT8 or a similar mechanic be used again in the future?

Mike Chapman:

Oh yes!

Question:

Will there be a use for the empty chests we find on shores in the near future?

Mike Chapman:

Yes! Soon you’ll find gold and objects inside as a emergent reward.

Question:

Are there any plans to rework riddle maps?

Mike Chapman:

Yes. They’ll be an update soon that uses the Collector’s Chest to make riddles more valuable and also give you some of the gold up front in the chest.

Question:

It would be so awesome if there were more levels to the Legend Athena quests. Would you consider letting those of us who are already level 10 Athena Legends, become a Pirate Lord after reaching level 20 in Athena or even level 50. I would love the challenge to becoming a Pirate Lord.

Mike Chapman:

We definitely want to expand Athena’s Fortune, but want to ensure that we can flesh out the gameplay for Pirate Legend before we do this.

New Locations

Question:

Will we ever see the Sea of Five Winds make it’s way into the game, a south Asian style would be such an amazing addition to the game and with Sea of Thieves art style I know it would look beautiful?

Mike Chapman:

👀

Question:

So I have a simple question, do you all see the stuff that fans create? Like the Frozen Fangs Concept from KPTN on Art Station? Or just the general things we fans do?

Mike Chapman:

We see EVERYTHING!

We have discussed a lot of new potential world regions, including ice themed regions, however, we want to ensure that any new region will enrich the potential gameplay possibilities.

I like the idea of expanding down, rather than out! 😉

Question:

Are you planning to add a new region?

Mike Chapman:

No plans this year, but exciting potential for the future. I think we’ll want to do something very different next time.

Question:

Within “The Art of Sea of Thieves” there’s some amazing location pieces and concepts that made up early exploration for the overall game. Locations like the “Sea of the Damned” “Sea of Sorrows” and the “Seas of the five Winds”. Are there any plans to one day see these areas come to the game in a similar fashion that the Devil’s Roar made it in?

Ryan Stevenson:

We explored loads of different worlds, items and options that can be seen in the art book. Some of these will remain in the depth but others will emerged from the waves. Take the goldhorder as a prime example, he was on the cover of the book but waited in the wings for the right time to strike fear into the heart of pirates on the sea of thieves.

Tall Tales

Question:

Will there be a Chapter 2 of Tall tales? Seeing a tale involving DeMarco and Lesedi would be a amazing!

Mike Chapman:

More tales are coming! Also love the idea of a tale or tales that involve DeMarco and Lesedi.

Question:

Hey, when I was wondering if we could hear as to when we could be expecting a new set of tall tales. The previous set helped bring my friends to the game and we are eagerly waiting on the next set.

Mike Chapman:

Yes! Soon (ish) 😉

Story & Lore

Question:

Are there any secrets in the game that seemingly no one has found?

Mike Chapman:

There are definitely dots to connect that no one has realised yet.

Question:

Will there be a sequel to the Athenas fortune novel?

Mike Chapman:

We’re discussing plans for future novels and comics. Lots of interesting plans!

Question:

Why are there three daggers in the Pirate Lords back? Will we ever learn the truth?

Joe Neate:

you will eventually learn the truth as to what happened here…

Question:

Will we learn more about our character and how we came to the Sea of thieves, will there be a story ending to the game?

Mike Chapman:

We tried to allude to how you got to the Sea of Thieves in the small opening cutscene where you wake up at the start alongside the map you followed. You will see a far richer opening to the game in the relatively near future that will explain a lot more behind this!

Question:

Will the Grand Maritime Union see the light of day?

WILL FLAMEHEART MAKES HIS DEBUT THIS MONTH?!

Mike Chapman:

Flameheart is resting!

In terms of the GMU, anyone can come through the Devil’s Shroud if they know the route 😉

Question:

Are the objects from the Sea of thieves RPG cannon? Will we ever see characters like the Lord guardian in the video game?

Mike Chapman:

All Expanded Universe stuff, like comics, novels and the RPG is all canon. All is a possibility to show up in the game, just like the Sea Dogs from the comics.

Question(s):

  1. Do all the Megaldons know each other exist / are they related?

  2. Will we ever be able to cook fruit to give added bonus health so our pirates can be vegetarian or at the very least have a Meatless Monday?

  3. Will there be any changes made to Devils Roar Cargo runs? I want to grind some Devils Roar Cargo Runs for commendations so I figured I’d ask.

  4. If you could give a completely confusing hint at a future feature or future update that will cause the community to debate and wonder for months what would it be?

Mike Chapman:

  1. All the Megalodons are from the same subterranean rift, so technically they are family 😉

  2. I’m sure we’ll do something here at some point.

  3. No plans to change the Devil’s Roar Cargo Runs at the moment.

  4. Haunting waters with burial chest, sails the Ashen Dragon to long lost rest

Question:

Will we ever figure out why The cursed Mermaid statues randomly appeared?

Mike Chapman:

Yes, you will! All will hopefully become clear!

Question:

Was there a reason, all the trading companies are stockpiling gunpowder?

Mike Chapman:

Yes, increased skeleton activity was the reason, with the following month leading to the theft of the Dark Relics. It was subtle 😉 All the monthly activities will hopefully make sense and tie together in the future.

Question:

Will we ever find out more about The Cap’n
that Flameheart mentions in the Tales of The Sea of Thieves book?

Mike Chapman:

Yes!

Question:

ONE word, that describes the following months for sea of thieves.

Mike Chapman:

Awakening

Cosmetics & Pets

Question:

How often will you add new things to buy in pirate emporium?

Joe Neate:

plan is to add to it on a monthly basis, in each monthly update.

Question:

People who have been playing the game since launch are amassing large quantities of gold. Are there plans to give more ways to spend your gold? Gold has lost much of its value to some players and the risk element of finding it and trading it in has diminished

Mike Chapman:

Yes, in the short term, we’re adding the Black Market as a new way to acquire cosmetics, but there will be much more impactful ways in the future. We totally see the reality of large gold wallets currently, especially for players who already have their favourite cosmetics. We want to add completely new reasons to spend gold that enrich the experience, not just be more cosmetics.

Question:

Will the black market cosmetics be priced high enough to incentivise players to fight over the reapers chests?

Joe Neate:

We believe so, and the doubloon reward from Reaper’s Chests will be going up too…

Question:

Are there any plans for different coloured bra bandages for the ladies? Please!

Ryan Stevenson:

We have lots of new clothing updates be tailored by the team at the moment and yes coloured bra bandages among other things is part of it.

Question:

Will we see any new curses in the future? I would absolutely love some skeletal curses or some mermaid curses

Ryan Stevenson:

We have explored a whole range of cool curses for the pirates from the order of souls eyes, gold curse and many others and we haven’t exhausted them yet. I can’t wait to see players adventures with the others.

Question:

Do you plan to add on anything more to pets and the new emotes at all? (on top of what’s in the Insider’s build)

Joe Neate:

Re pets and emotes: plan is to grow and update what is available on a monthly basis.

Question:

For clothing, is it possible we could get more “general” pirate clothing that doesn’t belong to a set?

Ryan Stevenson:

We are looking at adding in more general pirate clothing and actually have some being worked on right now, we also love the idea of more ways for players to role play as pirates in the world with clothing.

Question:

What do you think of the idea of having Pirate Legend exclusive pets and pet cosmetics. Not new pet models, just Legendary colourings of existing pet models probably.

Joe Neate:

This is actually a pretty nice idea. We’ll discuss.

Question:

In both gameplay and art direction, what’s your approach to striking the right balance between the “pirate” and “fantasy/magical”?

Ryan Stevenson:

That’s a tricky one and something we are always trying to balance ourselves, sometimes a piece of concept art has been a bit too medieval fantasy rather than pirate but it’s about emerging yourselves in pirate inspiration from movies, books and history…failing that…wrap a rope around it, add a few barnacles, and make sure its made from enough wood and hey presto its pirate.

Question:

NPC’s have some really cool looking clothing, beards, hair styles etc. What is keeping you from releasing these to us?

Ryan Stevenson:

We often want NPCs to feel special in the world as rich characters to meet so sometimes have to build them in a different way from player models, but we are always looking how to enable players to have clothing or options that matches or echoes them to role play in the world. The team have been cooking up lots of new things and when ready look forward players getting there hands on them.

Question:

Is there ever going to be an opportunity to re-roll our pirates appearance but keep our items?

Mike Chapman:

Yes!

Question:

Will we ever be able to equip Madame Olivia’s hairstyle as a cosmetic in game. (The Order of Souls Lady at Plunder Outpost)

It is my favorite hairstyle in game.

Also… What happened to Yura after Sudd’s took over her Seapost? I miss her.

Mike Chapman:

No plans at the moment, but would love to have Madame Olivia’s hair in the game. We’re also looking at company themed cosmetics so players can look more like some of the company NPC’s.

Unfortunately Yura was eaten by a shark 🙁 No one is ever really gone though in the Sea of Thieves world. After returning from the Ferry, I think Yura realised that life on the Seapost is just too dangerous.

Question:

The Pirate Generator is Great , how many different Pirates are there and are they added as the playerbase keeps growing so it would still be very exceptional you see the same Pirate twice?

Ryan Stevenson:

With how the Pirate Generator works there’s an infinite amount. It’s known as the IPG infinite Pirate Generator but just like real life you sometimes see similar people but each is unique. Every time you refresh the pirate selection you see pirates we have never been seen before and are made just for you.

Bugs and Fixes

Question:

Will the legendary hunter if the sea of thieves achievement be fixed? I’m at 40 out of 57 commendations and it still says 5%. Others are saying they finished it and have the title but no achievement.

Mike Chapman:

I believe this is one of the last Commendation issues that we need to fix. This will get resolved and apologies to any players affected.

Question:

I would like to know if any considerations are going in to place about the skeleton ships and megs coming up at the same time when you are on a sloop by yourself

Joe Neate:

currently balancing the experience for sloops against world threats like this; agree it can be a bit brutal at times.

Question:

Will there be away of saving progress in game ie like tall tales so you con go back to it at a later date or time?

Joe Neate:

this is super complex in terms of the work required, but we definitely hear the feedback. We are looking at all the options we have here, with the aim of reducing the time investment required to complete Tall Tales. Ironically, it will take quite a time investment from us 🙂

Question:

Is legacy beard coming back?

Joe Neate:

yes, we are just fixing it!
